5 Songs Without Words (5 Lieder ohne Worte) by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy
Arranged for 2 C Flutes, Alto Flute and Bass Flute by Gottfried Stein; also includes optional cello part
Includes score and parts
Mendelssohn was an early Romantic period German composer, conductor and organist, and is given credit for the revival on interest in JS Bach's music. These Songs without Words were selected, as they lent themselves particularly to the flute-in other words, not the fully textured, dynamically excessive ones, but the elegiac and capricious. This allowed the arranger to maintain Mendelssohn's dynamics and phrasing, especially the certain powers of discretion when transcribing a composition from a keyboard instrument to a wind instrument. A cello part has also been included, in case there is no bass flute available for the quartet.
