Flight for Solo Flute by Adolphus Hailstork
Duration: c. 4:30
for Laurel Zucker
This inspiring 4½-minute solo has drama, beauty, idiomatic flashiness, and an opening theme in a minor key that comes back in a triumphant major key. Flight” is within reach of dedicated students, and very effective for professional recitals.
In 2015, the flute virtuoso Laurel Zucker released an album called Lil Lite O’ Mine: Flute Music by Composers of African Descent. I was honored to have a couple of pieces included on that album. Recently I decided to write a new piece dedicated to Laurel. That piece called “Flight” begins slowly and then suddenly takes off like a bird on it’s maiden voyage leaping from a cliff. After a torrid swing through the sky, the young bird lands gently. —- Adolphus Hailstork
