In the Bleak Midwinter by Gustav Holst
Arranged for Flute Choir by Ann Cameron Pearce
Includes score and parts
Instrumentation:
6 C Flutes
Alto Flute (alternate for Flute 5)
Bass Flute (alternate for Flute 6)
Chimes (optional – included in Flute 3)
E-flat Flute (optional – included in Flute 2)
This arrangement makes possible several different combinations of instruments. It can be performed on all C flutes or with the addition of alto and bass flutes on part 5 and 6 (as indicated). The utilization of an Eb flute during the second half of the second flute part provides a special hollow timbre to the ensemble that is very effective. Also, the substitution of handchimes for flute 4 during the second and fourth sections of the piece adds another dimension of resonance to the chords and descant. Careful listening will facilitate proper balance.
