Monochrome I

Monochrome I for Eight Flutes by Peter Schickele.

Monochrome means “one color,” and each of the pieces in Schickele's series of compositions is written for a multiple number of a single kind of instrument. Each Monochrome explores a variety of harmonic, rhythmic, melodic, and timbral textures. (Also see Monochorome V.)

Monochrome I was written for members of Albert Tipton's flute class at the 1959 summer music school in Aspen, Colorado. Its original title was 'Tutti Flutti', but by the time it was extended and revised (the following winter), the idea of writing similar pieces for other instruments had taken shape, and the word “monochrome” was appropriate for the series. Composed in one movement, ABA form (slow – fast – slow).

Scored for 8 C Flutes (Flutes 2, 3 and 4 doubling on piccolo).
