Introduction:
      Debussy based his orchestral Prélude on a poem by Stéphan Mallarmé which may be paraphrased as follows: A faun awakens from a dream of two nymphs, one with “eyes cold as tearful spring,” the other like “breath in the fire of noon.” In a dazzle of light and color, the daydreaming faun indulges in a visionary pursuit of the remembered nymphs. One he manages to capture, but when she escapes his grasp, his fantasy collapses. As twilight gathers, the frustrated faun is drawn toward a vision of Venus on Mount Etna. 
      In this arrangement by Judy Loman, Principal Harpist with the Toronto Symphony, the flute part is based on Debussy's original version of “Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun”, with the flute carrying more of the melodic material than in the later orchestral version. The harp part, arranged by Judy Loman, is derived from Debussy's two piano version with additional material taken from the harp part in the orchestral score. 
      This arrangement was first performed on March 28th, 1993 at the University of Toronto in a Faculty Artists Concert given by Nora Shulman, flute, and Judy Loman, harp.
