Que si te lo digo! (’cause I say so!) by Ricardo Teruel
For two piccolo flutes
Includes score and parts
Duration: 5 minutes
In September, 1986 two extraordinary Venezuelan flutists: Pedro Eustache and Luis Julio Toro invited me to write them a short piece to premiere at their duo recital “Music of Our Friends”. I suspected a healthy professional rivalry between them, so I decided to write a work where one challenged the other in a permanent struggle, but not exempt of humor. When I showed them the music, they told me that the rhythm was so Caribbean that they wanted to add some improvised congas obligati and they had just the right musician to do it. I said that there was no problem by me as long as they announced that it was their idea so if it was successful, it was thanks to them, but if it didn’t work out then I had nothing to do with it. The premiere was with the congas and a huge success. In 2004, another great Venezuelan flutist and even greater friend, Javier Montilla played with Enver Cuervos. It only had to wait 18 years (like an exceptional whisky?) for its second chance. This time it was played as written: no congas.
As founding members, Javier and Enver have included this piece in the repertoire of the Latin American Academy of Flute of the National Youth Orchestras and Choirs System. In 2011 two young flutists, Ana Paola Rincones and Eva Moreno, played it brilliantly at the Academy’s Flute Festival.
