Rain is the experience of a rain storm with a Pacific Northwest flavor. The second Bass Flute part begins and ends the piece with the motif that is the heartbeat throughout.  The raindrops start short and sparse, but as the storm progresses they become more full.  The storm comes to a climax and slowly starts to diminish as the clouds move away. As the storm recedes, the notes lighten again like softening rain
