Description
Reflections I, II, and III for two flutes by Fay Neary
Includes two scores
“Reflections I,II & III” (for two flutes) were commissioned by “Freunde der Querflote e. V.” (a Germany-wide association of flautists), for publication in their Annual Manuscript 2013. As the name suggests, the three movements feature many melodic reflections. Sometimes these reflections occur as temporal echoes between the two flutes; at other times the mirror line is placed within a melodic theme, redirecting the original phrase as an inversion or retrograde. Only rarely is the reflection an exact replica. At times the speed is modified, or, as with optical reflections, the shade or colour is adjusted. In “Reflection II” the role of the mirror is taken up alternately by one of the instruments, allowing the other voice to caper about either side of it. In “Reflection III”, both flutes, besides trading material back and forth between one another, also adopt mirror lines with respect to their own melodic cells, forming numerous symmetrical shapes at a microscopic level.
