Reynaldo Hahn wrote several chamber pieces which utilized flute, and this elegant piece, Romanesque, originally written for flute, viola and piano is arranged here for flute, alto flute, and piano. This beautiful work utilized a simple theme with a blending of tonal colors and sonority that demonstrate Hahn's compositional mastery. The term Romanesque is used to describe a type of architecture dating from the 9th to the 12th centuries. It also refers to paintings and sculptures from that period. The music from this era was often chant-like in nature with simple lines and repetitive chord changes. Hahn has cleverly captured this medieval style in this composition.
