In the year 1778, Mozart heard the Italian violin virtuoso Gaetano Brunetti. Brunetti, who was very well known at that time, was borin in 1740 in Pisa (though another source gives his date of birth as 1753) and died in Madrid in 1807, it is said “from shock at Napolean's conquest of Madrid” (Riemann). It was for Brunetti that Mozart composed the Rondo in C Major for Violin and Orchestra (K373), and Brunetti gave its first performance in Vienna in 1781. A transcription of the work into D Major for flute and orchestra was made on account of its suitability to that instrument, and this was mentioned in the supplement of Kochel's Catalogue as number 184. This transcription, with cadenzas, is published in the present edition for the first time.
