Felix Mendelssohn composed this overture at the request of the Leipzig Theatrical Pension Fund for a benefit performance of Hugo's 'Ruy Blas'. He wrote the overture in three days, creating an uncharacteristically “blood and thunder”, bombastic work of Romantic emotionalism. Fittingly, it would be an attention-getting opener for any concert program.
