Six Kentish Trios

These trios were written for the Italian flute ensemble, Fluticity. Taking names from the dialect of Kent, the composer took terms that attracted him, and let himself be inspired by what they suggested, and not wholly by their actual meanings- folk names for flowers or agricultural land.  The three parts are of equal difficulty, with the first flute introducing the theme most of the time. Of moderate difficulty, once the rhythmic patterns have been taken in they flow quite easily. 

Contents: 
1. Summer Land: Ground that lies fallow in summer.  Written as a 9/8 jig to create a lively yet quirky Summer dance. 
2. French May: is the Kentish term for Lilca, which inspired this Andantino Waltz
3. Ragged Jack: is the meadow lychnis or ragged robin. The term 'ragged' instpired the syncopated nature of this piece. 
4. Stone Reach: is a portion of a field where the stones lie thicker.  It is a brisk walk through the fields- and through a few key changes.  The third flute has the melody for most of the time. 
5. Canterbury Bells: are the wild campanula. Starting from the idea of distant bells, becoming progressively funkier! The writing uses close voicings in the style of a “jazz” horn section. 
6. Devil in the Bush: was a great inspirational title.  Actually a flower, otherwise known as 'love in the mist' this was a cue for a tricky timesignature. Keep going and keep counting – it will come together in the end!
