Sleepy Hollow for Two Bass Flutes and Piano by Daniel Dorff
Piano score and parts
Commissioned by flutists Wendy Stern and Peter Sheridan
Duration: c. 8′
Inspired by a visit to upstate New York’s beautiful and notoriously haunted Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Dorff has created an atmospheric yet spooky work for the perfectly-suited scoring of two bass flutes and piano. Commissioned as a postscript to the composer’s Sonata (Spirit of the Hudson), Sleepy Hollow takes us to scenic upstate New York, where you may wonder what could be hiding in and amongst the beautiful trees of the forest at night – is it just a night owl, or something spookier? Nothing better for setting the mood for ghostly spirits to walk the earth than the otherworldly timbre of two bass flutes.
