The Thieving Fermata started out as an exploration of additive rhythm in 5/8 for 7 flutes, 5 concert, 1 alto and 1 bass. A simple flute theme was broken down into individual parts and the semiquaver gaps gradually filled by other flutes. The piece develops and then returns to a slightly challenging semiquaver rhythm at K.
Throughout the twist and turns of the piece the quaver pulse should remain relentlessly constant.
The Thieving Fermata was first performed at the 2015 rarescale Summer School at Harlaxton Manor in Lincolnshire
