Preface:
      Robert Schumann completed the Three Romances for Oboe and Piano in Dresden on December 12, 1849 and presented them to his wife, Clara, on Christmas Day of that year. On December 27th Schumann heard the works for the first time on violin and piano, performed by Clara and a Dresden violinist. The first performance on oboe occured on November 2, 1850 in Dusseldorf. The work was published in January of 1851 under the title Three Romances for Oboe (violin or clarinet ad libitum) with pianoforte accompaniment Op. 94. Arrangements have been subsequently published for cello, viola, horn and flute. This is the first transcription for a melody instrument with guitar accompaniment.
      Although transcribing piano music from the German Romantic Period to the guitar presents particular challenges, these works fall surprising well on the fingerboard. Bass notes that frequently occur in octaves have been reduced to a single line. Notes that duplicate the melody in the solo part have generally been eliminated. Bass lines have been faithfully preserved and therefore chords are in their original inversions although not always in their original voicings. Some of Schumann's chromatically rich chords are too dense to be rendered completely. In these cases attention has been given to retaining as much of the solo and texture of the original as possible, with an eye towards playability. This transcription retains the original keys of the three movements.
