Trio Op87 in C
By Ludwig van Beethoven
Edited by Albert J. Andraud
Transcribed by R. Mark Rogers

Scholars disagree as to the specific dates of composition for Beethoven's Trio, Op. 87, originally for two oboes and English horn, but the work was first performed on a concert of the Vienna Tonkunstler-Sozietat on Decemner 23. 1793.  The rather interesting combination of two oboes and English horn is thought to have been suggested by a work done by Johann Wendt for similar combination of instruments, and in any event, Beethoven admired the sound sufficiently to compose (in 1796-97) a set of variations on “La ci darem la mano” from Mozart's opera Don Giovanni for the same comination.  The Trio. Op. 87 has long been one of the composer's most popular works, appearing in numerous editions for a wide variety of instruments, prompting the present edition for mixed trio of flute, oboe and clarinet (or English horn).
