The Composition:
Two Pieces for Children's Concerts was conceived as a result of a grant of funds awarded to the Dallas Chamber Players by the Music Performance Trust Fund of the Dallas Federation of Musicians. The grant was to be used to present concert demonstrations ot the children of the Dallas Public School System, providing both an educational and an entertaining musical experience for the youngsters.
Program Notes:
A suggested presentation is included in the score for Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. This arrangement, designed as a theme and four variations, allows the separate instruments to be introduced and demonstrated individially, and then in conjunction with the previously introduced instruments. The final variation has all five members of the quintet playing.
Chiapanecas, on the other hand, is designed to let the audience move around, clap their hands, and make a little noise. It also illustrates the sound of the complete woodwind quintet in a manner that is easily recognized by the children. It might be helpful to have one member of the quintet play the filk tune so the children will know what to listen for.
