Umoja (Swahili for “unity”) was originally a composition for women’s voices (SSAA) to celebrate the first day of Kwanzaa. It later became a signature anthem for the woodwind quintet ensemble Imani Winds and was listed as one of the “Top 100 American Works” by Chamber Music America.Umoja features a simple, elegant melody repeated throughout, accompanied by infectuous layers of rhythms and harmonies from the African diaspora. The meter dances between the written 3/4 and implied 6/8 time, always lilting joyfully under one large beat. The result is a charming and uplifting divertissement that can be performed at any time of the year, regardless of season.
