French composer Paul de Wailly (1854 – 1933) originally composed this Aubade for flute, oboe and clarinet. It was premiered by the Société moderne d’instruments à vent in Paris on March 7, 1902, with flutist Georges Barrère, to whom it was dedicated. This arrangement by Shelley Collins adapts the work for two C flutes and alto flute.
As a genre, the aubade dates back to the Middle Ages. Defined as a song to greet the dawn, the aubaude was a popular topic for troubadours who sang of lovers parting in the early morning, told from the perspective of a watchman warning his fellow knight to leave a romantic tryst quickly in order to escape detection.
