An modern American composer, this show-piece was written for his two favorite instruments.  By interested in discovering the procedures necessary to combine the main innovative streams of the 20th century (serialism and jazz, for example) into one viable style.  With this piece, he was able to add elements of virtuosity to a serious three movement piece.
