Performance Notes:
Isaac Albeniz (1860-1909) was a child prodigy, as was his sister. A youth with a spirit of adventure, he ran away from home at the age of 13 and traveled in Spain, giving piano concerts. He also stowed away on a ship headed for Puerto Rico and traveled to Cuba and the United States, performing concerts to support himself. He began composing nationalistic works, of which Cordova is included. Cordova was originally a piece written for the piano. Russel S. Howland's arrangement of Cordova was written for Les Flutes Enchantees and includes parts for bass clarinet, string bass/contrabass flute, and optional harp. It may also be performed with a substitute bass flute part (for bass clarinet) and a fourth flute part (for alto flute). The string bass or contrabass flute part adds depth to the arrangement.
