“Johann Joachim Quantz (1697-1773) composed the Concerto in G Major for Two Flutes and Orchestra for the festivities on June 29th, 1751 marking the completion of the royal chapel built by Gaetano Chiaveri.  Quantz was at the height of his career, having moved to the court of Frederick II in Berlin in 1741 shortly after Frederick became King of Prussia.  Quantz commanded an annual salary of 2000 Thalers, which dwarfed that of his peers.  Quantz earned additional sums making new flutes for Frederick and composing new repertoire for the king.
   The concerto follows a typical Vivaldi pattern of fast-slow-fast and is gallant in style. The harmony stays close to G Major and there is almost no contrapuntal writing. The repeated triplet motif in the first movement unites the alternating piano and soli sections.  The inner movement features long suspensions and trills in the flute parts accompanied by a unified moving eigth-note line in the string and harpsichord parts.  In the final movement, wind and string sections alternate in antiphonal banter; the flute solos consist of rapid arpeggiated and scalar phrases stylistic of virtuoso violin writing.” Preface by Anita Miller Reider
