This great collection of music by French composers contains works which were all requested at some time or other, by the Paris Conservatory for it’s annual contest.  They represent a period in which France was known all over the world not only for it’s literature for flute, but also for it’s most representative flutists: Paul Taffanel, Adolphe Hennebains, Philippe Gaubert and Marcel Moyse. Some of the pieces contained in this collection were written by composers who were themselves great performers, and consequently, very aware of the possibilities of the instrument.  Other pieces were written by well-known composers who did not hesitate to ask advice from flutists of the time.   All of these pieces show the flute at it’s best and give to the performer an opportunity to demonstrate fully all of their abilities.  One can judge easily any aspect of a performer’s proficiency with such pieces: no wonder, they were written and chosen for a contest!  Each of them is a real challenge for the performer, both technically and musically; within a very short period of time the player has to show all their possibilities: creative imagination, musicianship, technical perfection and virtuosity, beauty of tone, endurance, etc.  — Louis Moyse
