Performance Notes:
Henry Rowley Bishop, born in 1786 and died in 1855 was an English composer and conductor. He held professorships at Oxford and Edinburgh, as well as holding appointments at many London theatres. In 1842 he became the first professional musican to be knighted.
Bishop wrote and adapted many famous works for the stage and was responsible for vandalizing well known operas often adding music of his own to the original scores. He is remembered nowadays for the song “Home sweet home,” which comes from his opera The Maid of Milan and the song “Lo! Here the Gengle Lark,” which has an exciting flute obbligato.
