Description

Pavane composed by Gabriel Faure (1845-1924)
Edited by Douglas Woodfull-Harris for 3 Flutes
Includes SCORE ONLY

Gabriel Faure's Pavane was composed for orchestra in 1886 and then amended in 1887 with an ad libitum chorus using verses by Verlaine.  It is one of his most performed works and exists in arrangements for a variety of instrumental combinations.  In the original Faure relies largely on the wind instruments and in particular the flute to bring forward the melodic character of the piece.  The melody is set against a nearly throughgoing pizzicato string accompaniment.  The present edition for three flutes has been transposed to allow the accompaniment figure to fit within the range of the flute.  The notes in small print are given for those players with instruments equiped with a low B extention.  This arrangement gives all three players the opportunity to “step forward” and take the lead, as well as a chance to shape the accompaniment.  This edition is also equally well suited for group instruction.  – Preface by Douglas Woodfull-Harris
