From the composer's notes: …As in most of my work, serial techniques are used along with sounds and concepts from the world of jazz. The fairly frequent appearance of simultaneous whole-t tone and chromatic scales is a unifying feature, and unusual for me: I almost never use conventional scales. The first movement is a sort of expanding double canon. The second, using some material from the first is slower and complexly lyrical. The third is a rather intense palindrome. For movements four and five, I have reached back to some “pop” ideas: repeated riffing patterns and dance- band ideas from the 40's. Perhaps less stuffy than much music for the flute quartet, this piece should be a colorful addition to the repertoire and, I trust, will reward the possibly substantial preparation.”
