Performance Notes:
Sextet for Flutes was composed in 1987 for five flutes and alto flute. It is in four movements:
– The first is an 'Andante' in a pastoral mood. A second section, in faster tempo, is built upon part of the main theme – a free variation. The first mood returns, bringing the movement to an end.
– The second movement is marked 'Allegro Scherzando' and features a jocose theme in 6/8 meter and a contrast in 2/4.
– The third movement is another 'Andante.' Much use is made of parallel 11th chords. This is an ideal sound for instruments of the same timbre. After a contrasting section in 16ths, the mood returns.
– The fourth movement is marked 'Allegro.' The rhythms are often syncopated; the pace is fast and sometimes furious!
