Schneider (1770-1839) wrote for almost every musical genre. He was praised by his contemporaries as a colleague who composed with “tremendous ease, effect, thoroughness and elegance.” His artistic skill enabled him to meet the requirements of middle-class taste and exert an inspiring and balancing influence. His instrumental works in particular show his perfect adaptation to the style and forms of expression of high Classicism, while revealing a virtuoso mastery of instrumentation. In this field he also showed an interest in new developments, introducing for his solo concertos. His chamber music in particular is richly inventive, and when performed with care is still capable of pleasing many lovers of music in the concert hall (Altmann). Schneider wrote sextets for winds and strings, quintets for flute (oboe) and strings, some 20 string quartets, more than 70 flute quartets, oboe, horn and bassoon quartets, many string and wind trios as well as an extravagant amount of string-and wind duos, among them 96 flute duets.
