Kokopelli, composed by Robert Raines, dedicated to William Averitt
(Music for Flute Ensemble with Percussion)
The composer writes, “Combining flutes with percussion is an ancient ritual – among the oldest of musical traditions…. – so I wanted the Flute players to perform their own percussion instruments in this piece. This is also a nod to the traditions of Flute and percussion in American Indian music. I want to stress that I've kept these parts very basic. They are simple play on easily accessible children's percussion instruments and, hopefully, add color and make the piece fun to perform and unique among Flute choir works.”
Scored for 5 flutes (2 double on piccolo), 2 alto flutes, bass flute (optional doubling of the bass part on contrabass flute) and Percussion (drum/bongo, rattle, shaker, tambourine, and triangle) Flutes 2 and 3 and alto flute 2 double on percussion; flutes 4 and 5 double on piccolo and percussion.
Duration 9:30
