The Huron Carol, or as it was known at the time “Jesous Ahationhia”, was probably the first Christmas carol sung in the new world. Written in the Huron language to a French tune, to-day, it is widely known through its English translation. The words are presumed to have been written by Father Jean de Brebeuf, the French Jesuit missionary, who worked amongst the Hurons in the Georgian Bay area of northern Ontario, Canada. The words were sung to a sixteenth century French carol, where the carol was preserved, and is continued to be sung to this day.
